Obesity, General, and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon

Dr Suzanne Di Sano is a General Surgeon and a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She has subspecialty training in the fields of minimally invasive (Keyhole and Robotic) surgery, upper Gastro-Intestinal surgery including bariatrics, and complex hernia repairs. She has GESA certification for gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

She completed her medical studies at the University of NSW and undertook surgical training in Newcastle. After completing general surgical training in 2019, she travelled interstate for four years of subspecialty experience. She spent two years on the Gold Coast completing a robotic fellowship. Following this she obtained highly competitive positions at St Vincent’s Melbourne and the Austin Hospital, two well-established and high volume public bariatric and upper gastrointestinal units in Australia. These units emphasize a multifaceted approach to bariatric surgery, allowing Suzanne to work closely with medical specialists, dieticians and psychologists to achieve the best outcomes for her patients. 

These experiences have given her expertise in primary and revisional bariatric surgery, reflux surgery including hiatus hernia, and abdominal hernia surgery through open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques. She is an accomplished general surgeon who also performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy, gallbladder surgery, skin and lymph node excisions, and bowel surgery. 

Suzanne is involved in research and clinical teaching. She has presented at national conferences, has published articles internationally and held academic positions at Griffith, Bond and Newcastle Universities.

Suzanne is an empathetic surgeon who takes pride in delivering the highest standards of care. She practices evidence based, holistic medicine with a focus on achieving the best individual results based on her patient’s specific circumstances. Her ability to effectively communicate complex medical concepts enables her patients to make well informed decisions.

Having spent much of her medical career in the Hunter region, she is now happily settled back in Newcastle and committed to delivering the best for her local community. She enjoys getting out into nature and spending time at the beach with her husband and baby. When she isn’t with family she is usually found at the pottery studio, enthusiastically dedicating herself to the challenge of making the perfect mug.

She operates privately through Lake Macquarie and Newcastle Private Hospitals. She is a visiting medical officer at Maitland Public Hospital.
